Saluki

Of great significance and interest to students and fanciers of the Salukis are two international events, each unique and about which I will write a few words.

First on the calendar is the Festival of the Saluki to be held in England next year and happens to coincide with the 110th anniversary of Florence Amherst's first litter in 1897. Festival fever is mounting for The Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club's presentation of an unprecedented, weeklong party, celebrating our beautiful hounds. Scheduled events are as follows:
31st August: Opening Ceremony at the City of Birmingham Championship Show
1st September: Saluki Symposium at Jesus College, Cambridge
2nd September: Northern Saluki Club Championship Show (judged by Mrs. Beryl Payne)
3rd September: Opening of the Saluki Art Exhibition at the Kennel Club
5th September: Gallery viewing at the Kennel Club
6th September: Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club Championship Show and sponsored luncheon at Loseley Park by kind permission of Richmond Dog Show Society.  Judges are Mr. Ken Allan (dogs), Mr. Bo Bengston (bitches), and Mr. Owen Davies (referee).
7th September: Richmond Dog Show Society Championship Show (judge to be announced).
7th September: Gala Dinner at the Tithe Barn, Loseley Park
8th September: Lure Coursing at Falkland Farm with BBQ

The following year, the Saluki fancy of Finland warmly invites you and yours to a Saluki celebration without equal. In and around the vicinity of Helsinki, the week of June 26 – July 2, 2008 will see a week of seminars (covering all things Saluki by recognized breed authorities), shows, races and lure-courses – all set in the lovely Finnish summer. This is a marvelous chance to share your passion for the breed with like-minded people from across the globe – from neophytes to seasoned veterans.
The present schedule includes:
26th June: Saluki Lure-Coursing Competition
27th June: National Saluki Specialty (Judges Mrs. Rosemary Lewis of Knightellington Salukis, England, and Dr. JoAnn Van Arsdale of Chubasco Salukis, USA)
28th June: National Sighthound Specialty
29th June: International All-breed Show
30th June: Breed Seminars
1st July: Breed Seminars and the Saluki Racing Competition
2nd July: Saluki Racing Competition

For further information, contact Ms. Micaela Lehtonen, Metsäkulmantie 27, FIN-14770, Eteläinen, Finland 011-358-41-483 2630, qashani@gmail.com, http://www.saluki.fi/congress/welcome.html

Two wonderful pilgrimages for the discerning Saluki scholar – each with their particular sightseeing delights and cultural experiences. Perhaps I’ll see you there?
